★★★★☆ 4 / 5
Great page turner, complex protagonists, interesting story, and satisfying denouement. I devoured it.
The only criticism I have is the physics. The authors claim that it is space opera, so space physics don’t matter, but I don’t think that’s right; true space opera like Star Wars generally never worries one microsecond about space physics at all, whereas this book talks enough about G’s, the effects of gravity, and entropy that it shows when it gets it wrong. The Expanse sits in the uncanny valley between space opera and hard sci-fi, and sometimes trips up when trying to walk that fine line.
That aside, this book is highly recommended, it is just super fun to read!
